NSW Extends Free Train Travel Into Early Saturday

Opal gates on Sydney’s heavy rail, metro, NSW TrainLink networks will be turned off as recompense for months of industrial action disruptions

Overview

  • Free travel will run from 12.01 AM Thursday until 6 AM Saturday across Sydney Trains, Sydney Metro and the airport line with Opal gates switched off.
  • Passengers on regional and interstate NSW TrainLink services must book a seat in advance to qualify for automatic fare refunds during the free period.
  • Buses, ferries and light rail remain excluded and will continue to charge regular fares as normal.
  • The extension follows a Fair Work Commission order pausing union action and a new enterprise agreement granting rail workers a 16 percent pay rise over four years.
  • Transport NSW estimates the initiative will cost around $7 million in foregone revenue while delivering a boost to hospitality and retail businesses.
