NSW Declares Disaster as Wind Shift Threatens 20 Uncontained Bushfires

Widespread losses on the Central Coast, including Koolewong, prompted a surge of more than 1,500 firefighters working in extreme heat and gusty winds.

  • More than 70 fires are burning across NSW, about 20 uncontained, with over 1,500 firefighters preparing for a southerly wind change and possible thunderstorms.
  • At least 12 homes were destroyed at Koolewong on the Central Coast and up to four were lost near Bulahdelah in the Crawford River area, with damage assessments ongoing.
  • Natural disaster declarations cover the Central Coast, Mid Coast, Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook, Warrumbungle and Dubbo, activating DRFA support for residents, businesses and councils.
  • An emergency warning at Redhead south of Newcastle was issued overnight and later downgraded, as crews and aircraft focused on priority firegrounds including Koolewong.
  • In Tasmania, the Dolphin Sands fire damaged multiple properties and injured two firefighters; it is contained but residents have been told it is not yet safe to return.
