NSW Bans Converted E-Bikes From Trains Starting Nov. 1

Officials cite battery fire risks identified through consultation.

Overview

  • Riders carrying pedal bikes retrofitted with motors will face $400–$1,110 fines on Sydney Trains, NSW TrainLink and Metro services, including platforms, from November 1.
  • The rule applies only to heavy rail and Metro, with buses, ferries and light rail unaffected, and factory e-bikes, shared fleets and mobility devices remaining permitted.
  • Transport for NSW will train frontline staff and run hotspot compliance blitzes once the ban takes effect.
  • Exemptions allow movement through station concourses, lifts, escalators and bike storage areas, including passage through community access gates.
  • The measure follows 77 e‑micromobility battery fires this year, including incidents at Blacktown and Liverpool stations, and will be implemented via amendments to the Passenger Transport (General) Regulation 2017 alongside a push for tougher national import standards.
