NSPCC Helpline Sees 47% Rise in Sports-Related Child Welfare Contacts

The charity urges use of its free e-learning tools to strengthen safeguarding for young athletes.

Overview

  • Adult contacts to the NSPCC helpline about children’s welfare in sports increased from 425 to 623 in the year to March.
  • Reports from sports professionals rose to 135, more than three times the previous year’s total.
  • The most common concerns raised were sexual abuse or exploitation, emotional abuse and physical abuse.
  • Of the professional contacts where details were shared, 61% of concerns related to a child’s parent or caregiver.
  • NSPCC has expanded its Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport campaign with free, easy-access e-learning and resources, targeting regions such as Hampshire.
