NSE, BSE Shift Diwali Muhurat Trading to Afternoon on Oct. 21

The afternoon slot reflects efforts to ease back-office workloads, letting staff celebrate Diwali.

Overview

  • Indian exchanges will hold the Muhurat Trading session on Tuesday, October 21, from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., with a pre-open from 1:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and post-close modifications allowed until 2:55 p.m.
  • Routine trading will be closed on October 21 for Diwali Laxmi Pujan and on October 22 for Balipratipada, as per the published holiday schedule.
  • The timing change follows broker proposals to avoid late-night post-trade processing, with the idea originating within the Brokers' Industry Standards Forum from Jay Prakash Gupta.
  • An exchange official indicated the afternoon timing could become standard in future years if market participants agree.
  • MCX will observe the same Diwali holidays and plans its own Muhurat session on October 21, with the exact timing yet to be announced.
