NSE and BSE Close for Muharram

The gazetted holiday closed many state bank branches, shifted T+1 settlements to Monday, June 29, producing a three-day market break.

Overview

  • Major equity exchanges National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange were closed on Friday, June 26, suspending trading in equities, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, securities lending and borrowing, and electronic gold receipts.
  • Commodity markets followed separate rules: the Multi Commodity Exchange halted trading for the morning session and resumed in the evening, while the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange remained fully closed for the day.
  • The Government of India declared June 26 a gazetted holiday and the Reserve Bank of India issued a state-wise bank holiday list that closed branches across many states though digital banking and ATMs continued to operate.
  • Under India’s T+1 settlement cycle, trades that would have settled during the holiday window will be processed on Monday, June 29, delaying contract settlement and post-trade activity until markets reopen.
  • Exchanges published the 2026 holiday calendar earlier in the year and list remaining market closures such as Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24, and Christmas on December 25, so investors should plan around those dates.
