NRW to Record Multiple Nationalities in Police Crime Statistics From July 1

The change departs from federal practice, raising comparability concerns.

Overview

  • Interior Minister Herbert Reul ordered the PKS to list all recorded nationalities of suspects and victims, with the rule applied retroactively to July 1.
  • The LKA re-evaluated 2024 data under the new method: every sixth suspect with German citizenship also held another, led by deutsch/türkisch (10,307), deutsch/polnisch (6,652), deutsch/russisch (3,484), deutsch/marokkanisch (3,125) and deutsch/syrisch (2,185).
  • Under nationwide BKA guidelines only one nationality continues to be transmitted, leaving NRW alone in its expanded state-level reporting.
  • Reul said the broader recording creates transparency and can be relevant for assessing potential flight risk.
  • The NRW Greens and the Left condemned the measure as stigmatizing dual citizens and aiding populists, while police-union chief Rainer Wendt publicly supported it.
