NRW Reports 4.8% of Lessons Canceled in 2024/25, Unchanged From Previous Year

The ministry attributes persistent gaps to a long-term teacher shortage.

Overview

  • All roughly 4,400 public schools in North Rhine-Westphalia participated in the statewide data collection.
  • Five of six lessons were delivered as intended (83.9%), with 77.4% taught as scheduled and 6.5% in special formats.
  • Substitution covered 10% of teaching, distance learning accounted for 0.2%, and 1.4% was logged as independent study in upper secondary.
  • Teacher illness was the leading cause of cancellations, though three in four affected lessons were covered by substitutes.
  • The minister cited more than 9,700 additional staff over three years, and detailed tables will be posted on December 16 on the ministry portal.
