NRW Outlines November 'Quiet Holiday' Rules, Pausing Sports 5 a.m.–6 p.m. on Nov. 1 and 23

Officials emphasize protection of worship hours, with individual exercise and gyms remaining permissible.

Overview

  • Public sporting and similar events are prohibited from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Allerheiligen (Nov. 1) and Totensonntag (Nov. 23) under North Rhine-Westphalia’s holiday law.
  • On Volkstrauertag (Nov. 16), markets and sports are banned from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., and musical or other entertaining performances in hospitality venues are barred until 6 p.m.
  • Larger sporting events are generally not allowed during the main hours of church services, typically 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Authorities can grant indoor exemptions only for urgent need if the event has no entertaining character and does not significantly impair holiday protections.
  • Professional schedules show minimal disruption on Nov. 1, with no NRW home games in major leagues and only the Iserlohn Roosters’ DEL home game set to begin after 6 p.m.
