Germany Begins Week-Long Speedweek Enforcement in 13 States

Police say the operation is meant to cut serious traffic accidents by running mostly unannounced speed and safety checks at known danger spots.

Overview

  • The Speedweek started on Monday, August 3 and runs through August 9 with intensified speed controls in 13 German states coordinated by the European traffic police network ROADPOL.
  • Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, North Rhine‑Westphalia, Rhineland‑Palatinate, Saxony‑Anhalt, Schleswig‑Holstein and Thuringia are participating while Bavaria, Saxony and the Saarland are not.
  • Authorities are spreading checks across the whole week instead of a single 24‑hour blitz, keeping many mobile and stationary camera locations secret and concentrating on autobahns, rural roads, school zones, hospitals, construction sites and senior homes.
  • Police in some states said officers may also screen for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during stops, and automobile clubs broadly back targeted hotspot checks but criticise the timing during peak holiday travel and warn controls must not appear revenue driven.
  • Results and summaries will be published after the week and the action renews a wider debate over whether short intensive campaigns or permanent measures like fixed cameras, redesign of roads and speed limits are more effective at reducing deaths and serious injuries.
