NRW Interior Minister Says Foreign Tip Arrived Only After Solingen Attack

His written reply says intercepted material reached German authorities after the attack and source protection keeps key intelligence from the parliamentary inquiry.

Overview

  • The Solingen knife attack on 23 August 2024 killed three people and was claimed by the Islamic State, and the attacker has been sentenced to life in prison with preventive detention.
  • NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul told the Landtag investigation that a friendly foreign service had recorded the attacker’s IS 'claim' video but that the screenshot derived from it reached German and North Rhine-Westphalia authorities only after the attack.
  • Reul said security agencies did not know the attacker beforehand and that a former roommate’s post-attack claim of warning social workers and church staff did not reach police before the crime and lacked corroboration in the social worker’s file.
  • The minister declined to hand over further intelligence details to the inquiry because of foreign source protection and also confirmed his ministry holds no BAMF immigration file on the attacker, which the opposition says leaves documents still missing.
  • The committee’s focus has shifted from the criminal case, already legally closed, to institutional lessons about how foreign intelligence is shared, how informal local warnings are recorded and escalated, and how greater transparency could affect victims and public confidence.
