Overview

  • One and a half weeks before the Sept. 14 municipal elections, the state office counts 16 deaths among several thousand candidates.
  • Seven of the cases involve AfD candidates, with single cases in SPD, SDA, FDP, Greens, the Animal Protection Party, UWG, Free Voters, Partei Volksabstimmung and one voters' group across 14 municipalities.
  • Local police have excluded unnatural causes or third-party involvement in Rheinberg, Schwerte, Blomberg and Bad Lippspringe.
  • The election office says the number is not significantly increased despite online speculation fueled by insinuations from individual AfD politicians.
  • Municipalities are not required to report such deaths to the state, and election law provides for by-elections that can, if timing allows, be held on the regular voting day.
