Overview

  • The NRW Interior Ministry introduced a directive, retroactive to July 1, to capture more than one nationality for suspects and victims in the state’s crime statistics.
  • Under nationwide transmission rules, the Bundeskriminalamt will still receive only a single nationality for each person recorded.
  • An internal review found that in 2024 one in six suspects listed as German in NRW also held a second nationality.
  • The most frequent combinations among those dual nationals were German/Turkish (10,307), German/Polish (6,652), German/Russian (3,484), German/Moroccan (3,125) and German/Syrian (2,185).
  • Interior Minister Herbert Reul says counting multiple nationalities reflects reality and can inform detention decisions, while an RP Online commentary criticizes the move as unnecessary.
