Overview
- The NPPA issued a gazette notification on July 8 that fixed ceiling retail prices for 39 drug formulations and made those ceilings immediately binding.
- The list covers common chronic therapies and specialty products with wide price variation, from tablets set below Rs 20 each to Tenecteplase at Rs 60,238.27 per 50 mg vial.
- The notified ceilings exclude GST and require manufacturers to submit Form I-A within one month for eligible launches and to publish revised Form V price lists through the Integrated Pharmaceutical Database Management System (IPDMS).
- Companies that charge above the fixed prices must deposit the overcharged amounts with interest and face enforcement under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013 and the Essential Commodities Act.
- Patients on long-term treatment should see lower and more uniform retail prices while regulators will closely monitor compliance and availability, which could affect how manufacturers price, package or supply medicines.
