NPCI Implements UPI Usage Caps and Transparency Rules on August 1

Usage caps on balance checks, linked-account views and status queries alongside mandatory recipient-name display with instant balance updates bolster UPI stability

Overview

  • Daily limits now restrict users to 50 balance inquiries, 25 linked-account views and three transaction-status checks per app with a 90-second interval
  • Scheduled autopay mandates will run only during off-peak windows—before 10 AM, between 1 PM and 5 PM and after 9:30 PM—with capped retry attempts
  • All UPI apps must show the payee’s registered name before confirmation and display updated account balances immediately after every transfer
  • Banks and payment service providers faced a July 31 compliance deadline under NPCI’s May 21 circular or risk API throttling, fines and suspension of new user onboarding
  • Industry sources say NPCI is exploring biometric authentication to replace PINs in future UPI transactions, pending regulatory approval
