Nova Scotia Wildfire Expands, Newfoundland Tallies Destruction, B.C. Fire Numbers Fall

Localized gains could be short-lived with warmer, drier weather forecast mid-week.

Overview

  • Nova Scotia’s Long Lake wildfire grew beyond 32 square kilometres in Annapolis County, where a state of emergency stands and about 100 homes have been evacuated, with no residential damage reported.
  • In eastern Newfoundland, the Kingston fire is roughly 98 square kilometres, with officials confirming 98 structures tied to power meters destroyed and thousands still displaced.
  • British Columbia lists about 65 active wildfires with four out of control after weekend rain; Boltres Creek near Vernon is now being held with evacuations lifted, while Mount Underwood on Vancouver Island remains out of control at over 36 square kilometres.
  • New Brunswick counted at least 35 active fires on Monday, six out of control, as harvesting bans stall the forestry sector and forecasts warn thunderstorms could spark new ignitions.
  • Ottawa approved Nova Scotia’s request for assistance and is coordinating Canadian Armed Forces support, while crews and aircraft from Ontario, Prince Edward Island and the Northwest Territories are assisting on the fire lines.
