Nova Scotia Unveils $1.73M Green Upgrades for Seafood Industry

It will back electric motor conversions, solar arrays, energy-efficient refrigeration and other emissions-cutting equipment across 22 processing operations.

  • The Nova Scotia government has allocated $1.73 million through its Energy Efficiency Innovation Fund to help seafood companies reduce carbon footprints.
  • Since June 2024 the fund has supported 36 projects with $3.54 million and retains $2.96 million for future sustainability investments.
  • Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Kent Smith said the latest round targets electric motor conversions and solar system installations to curb fossil fuel use.
  • Asadalia Fisheries in Pictou secured $250,000 for a hybrid diesel-electric lobster boat retrofit and Lobster Hub Inc. in Meteghan Centre received $100,000 for an energy-efficient refrigeration unit.
  • A third application call is slated for later in 2025 to continue advancing climate adaptation measures in Nova Scotia’s seafood sector.
