Nova Scotia Reclassifies Long Lake Wildfire as 'Being Held,' Plans Limited Re-Entry

The province’s largest blaze this season spans roughly 8,468 hectares with 20 homes lost.

Overview

  • Natural Resources officials say the wildfire is now classified as being held, meaning no growth is expected if current conditions persist, with the burn area contained to about 84–85 square kilometres.
  • Re-entry is set for Tuesday at 22 addresses on Morse Road, Thorne Road and Neaves Road, with residents asked to report to the 1073 Morse Rd. checkpoint between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with identification.
  • Evacuation orders remain for the section of West Dalhousie Road from Che-Boag-A-Nish Road to Meadow Road, all of Heartland Road and Medicraft Lane, and some addresses on Thorne Road.
  • Crews have completed fire breaks around the perimeter and are advancing 50 to 300 metres into the interior with hose lines, though officials caution the fire is not out and will take time to extinguish.
  • Roughly 40 provincial firefighters are on the lines with support from 18 Ontario firefighters, 40 from Quebec and about 60 local volunteers.
