Nova Scotia Launches Legal Internship for Indigenous and Black High School Students

The week-long program aims to address underrepresentation in the justice system and inspire future legal careers.

  • The Nova Scotia Barristers' Society has introduced a free, one-week internship program for Indigenous and Black high school students interested in pursuing law.
  • The program, taking place during March break, offers participants hands-on experience and a half credit toward their high school education.
  • Students will meet lawyers and judges from diverse legal fields, including traditional and non-traditional roles, to foster mentorship and career exploration.
  • The initiative builds on recommendations from the 1989 Marshall Inquiry, which highlighted systemic inequities in the justice system following the wrongful conviction of Donald Marshall Jr.
  • Funded by the Law Foundation of Nova Scotia, the pilot program’s success will be closely monitored, with hopes of expanding it into an annual opportunity for equity-deserving groups.
