Nova Scotia Health Identifies Two New Measles Exposure Sites as Cases Reach 35

Overview

  • Nova Scotia Health’s public health branch reported exposures at the Guardian Pharmacy on Highway 354 in Kennetcook on July 3 and 6 and at the mobile primary care clinic and blood collection waiting room of the Cobequid Community Health Centre in Lower Sackville on July 6.
  • The outbreak in the northern health zone has reached 35 measles cases, including eight lab-confirmed and the remainder confirmed by household exposure and classic symptoms.
  • Measles symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure, so officials say anyone who did not develop symptoms within that period is no longer at risk from these sites.
  • Anyone who developed symptoms within 21 days of being at those locations is asked to call Public Health at 902-481-5824 to arrange testing and contact tracing.
  • Measles is highly contagious, prompting health-care providers to take special precautions, and vaccination with two MMR doses after the first birthday remains the best protection.
