Nova Scotia Expands Evacuations as Long Lake Wildfire Grows Near West Dalhousie

Evacuation orders widened along Highway 10 after shifting winds drove the out-of-control blaze closer to communities.

Overview

  • Officials extended evacuation orders twice on Sunday to include sections of Highway 10 around Trout, Zwicker and East lakes, Old Liverpool Road, Che-Boag-A-Nish Road and West Dalhousie Road in Albany Cross, after earlier adding parts of Morse Road and Thorne Road.
  • The fire remains out of control at more than 32 square kilometres, has crossed West Dalhousie Road and Thorne Road in several places, and has advanced as far as Paradise Lake, with updated size estimates delayed by heavy smoke.
  • Structure protection is underway as crews install sprinklers and build dozer guards, and the incident command post was moved from West Dalhousie to Bridgetown as a precaution.
  • The response includes more than 50 provincial firefighters supported by 62 Ontario personnel, dozens of local volunteers, six to seven helicopters, multiple fixed-wing aircraft and roughly 30 heavy equipment operators.
  • Environment Canada issued an air-quality warning for Annapolis County due to smoke, and officials cautioned that only sustained multi-day rain will significantly change the fire situation despite some rain in the forecast.
