Notre-Dame’s Towers Reopen, Completing Final Phase of Restoration

The milestone caps the post-2019 rebuild, highlighting redesigned access to the towers.

Overview

  • The south and north towers reopened to visitors on Saturday with a secured passage between them and first-time access to the Cour des citernes.
  • President Emmanuel Macron made the first official tour on Friday, calling the result “beautiful” after climbing to the south tower.
  • A new double-running spiral staircase of massive oak in the south tower—178 steps, 21 meters high, about 20 tonnes—separates the ascent from the descent.
  • The restoration rehangs the great bells, including Emmanuel (about 13.3 tonnes) and Marie (about 6.2 tonnes), on new support beams and introduces upgraded fire protection.
  • Tickets cost €16, are available only online, and the first day sold out in less than half an hour.
