Notre-Dame Reopens Restored Towers After Six Years

A redesigned, capacity-limited ascent prioritizes crowd management to protect the monument.

Overview

  • President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the reopening on Friday ahead of public access beginning Saturday.
  • The new 45-minute route starts in the south tower, climbs 424 steps via a new oak double-helix staircase, reaches terraces about 69 meters high, and exits through the north tower.
  • Access requires online reservations priced at €16, annual attendance is capped at about 400,000 with seasonal daily limits, and tickets are free for under-18s and many EU-resident youths up to 25 with booking.
  • Restoration work included replacing charred beams, dismounting and inspecting the bells, and lifting the 150-ton bellframe, with the 13.3-ton Emmanuel bell now seen up close.
  • Authorities note ongoing conservation on the apse, sacristy, and exteriors, with the towers’ phase funded at €552 million as broader restoration continues.
