Notable Figures Accused in Over 3,700 Claims Filed Under NY's Adult Survivors Act

The law, which has now expired, allowed sexual assault victims to file lawsuits over past misconduct. A separate NYC law provides a new window for gender-based violence suits until March 2025.

  • Over 3,700 legal claims were filed under New York's Adult Survivors Act, which suspended legal deadlines for a year to allow sexual assault victims to file lawsuits over misconduct that occurred years or decades ago.
  • Among the accused are former president Donald Trump, hip-hop mogul Sean 'Diddy' Combs, former film producer Harvey Weinstein, performer Jamie Foxx, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, comedian Russell Brand, music executive Antonio 'L.A.' Reid, Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose, boxer Mike Tyson, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, former Grammy Awards CEO Neil Portnow, and Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City.
  • Trump was sued by writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of sexual assault in the mid-90s. In May, a jury found Trump liable of sexually abusing Carroll and awarded her $5 million, including damages for defamation.
  • Combs was sued by three women this month, accusing him of sexual abuse in separate incidents dating back to the early 1990s. Combs has denied the allegations.
  • Although the Adult Survivors Act has expired, a separate New York City law, the Gender-Motivated Violence Act, provides a two-year window for victims of gender-based violence to bring lawsuits against those they say harmed them, even if the statute of limitations has passed. This deadline isn't until March 2025.
