Overview

  • The Grade I-listed keep, supported by a £13 million National Lottery Heritage Fund grant and local contributions, underwent a £27.5 million renovation that reinstated its 12th-century layout after pandemic and supply-chain delays.
  • Original medieval floors and rooms — including the kitchen, private chapel, king’s chamber and Great Hall — have been faithfully reconstructed with period-accurate furnishings.
  • The new “Gallery of Medieval Life,” created in partnership with the British Museum, presents around 1,000 artifacts with over 50 long-term loans from the London institution.
  • Step-free lifts, tactile maps and multi-sensory interactive displays now allow visitors to explore all five levels, making Norwich Castle Britain’s most accessible castle.
  • A Channel 4 documentary narrated by Sir Stephen Fry and produced by Eye Film will air on 24 August to showcase the restoration process.
