Norwegian Police Clear Ex-Prime Minister Solberg's Husband Over Stock Trading Allegations

Norway's economic crime unit, Oekokrim, found no evidence that Sindre Finnes, husband of former Prime Minister Erna Solberg, used inside information in over 3,600 share deals conducted during Solberg's two terms.

  • Sindre Finnes, husband of former Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, has been cleared by the Norwegian economic crime unit, Oekokrim, of using insider information in his over 3,600 share deals conducted during Solberg's political tenure.
  • Despite facing political and media pressure due to Finnes's share trading, Solberg, leader of Norway's center-right party Hoeyre, has expressed her desire to run for the prime ministerial position in the 2025 general election.
  • Finnes has admitted to dishonesty about his trading activities to Solberg, but denied using insider information, a crime under Norwegian law. His lawyer, Thomas Skjelbred, stated that Oekokrim's announcement confirms Finnes's share trading to be completely legal.
  • Former foreign minister Anniken Huitfeldt was implicated in a similar scandal. Huitfeldt was dismissed from her position due to 'the matter of the purchase and sale of shares' and admitted she should have monitored her husband’s financial activities more closely.
  • In the September local elections, Solberg's Hoeyre party garnered almost 26% of the votes, an increase of nearly 6 percentage points from the last elections in 2019, while Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre’s social democratic Labor party, once Norway’s largest party in local elections, received nearly 22% of the votes, a decrease of 3.1 percentage points from 2019.
