Norway Sends 13,500 Wartime Requisition Notices to Property Owners

Military officials cast the annual alerts as precautionary under a 1951 law.

Overview

  • The Armed Forces issued electronic messages on January 19 to selected owners of vehicles, machinery, vessels and other assets.
  • The notices state that any seizure could occur only during war or with authorization from the government and the monarch.
  • Each alert is valid for one year and can be renewed, and roughly two thirds this year are renewals from 2025.
  • Norway restarted this notification practice in 2022 after decades of dormancy, growing from just over 4,000 that year to about 14,000 in 2025.
  • International reports framed the step in the context of Russia and Arctic security, whereas Norwegian authorities describe it as routine preparedness.
