Overview

  • At their July 2025 meeting, the Thirsk and Malton area planning committee agreed in principle to the development but deferred final approval pending further studies.
  • Councillors specifically requested more information on environmental impacts, traffic management and the design of a new pedestrian road crossing.
  • The application was referred to committee review because part of the site is owned by Councillor Lindsay Burr, who did not take part in the decision.
  • Initial plans were drawn up in mid-2022 and a Section 106 agreement is still needed to secure contributions for local infrastructure improvements.
  • North Yorkshire Council logged nine letters in support and two in opposition and received a formal objection from rival retailer Lidl.
