Northwestern Memorial and Rush University Medical Center Tie as Illinois’s Top Hospitals and Land on U.S. News Top-20 Honor Roll

The tie marks the third time in U.S. News’s annual rankings that the Chicago rivals have shared the state’s top spot, with both earning multiple top-10 specialty rankings.

Overview

  • Northwestern Memorial and Rush University Medical Center are the only Illinois hospitals on U.S. News’s national honor roll of the top-20 hospitals for 2025-26.
  • Northwestern placed in the top 10 nationally for eight specialties, including cardiology, gastroenterology and pulmonology, while Rush earned top-10 status in geriatrics and neurology and neurosurgery.
  • University of Chicago Medical Center ranked third in Illinois, followed by Advocate Christ Medical Center in fourth and Endeavor Health’s suburban hospitals in fifth.
  • Chicago’s Shirley Ryan AbilityLab was named the nation’s best rehabilitation hospital for the 35th consecutive year.
  • U.S. News evaluated 4,400 hospitals and recognized 504 as regional best based on metrics such as mortality rates, preventable complications and nursing care levels.
