Overview
- Applications are open now for up to 18 engineering apprenticeship roles for the 2026 intake.
- The first year takes place at Myerscough College in Preston with accommodation available.
- Subsequent training is based at Allerton in Liverpool, Newton Heath in Manchester, Heaton in Newcastle or the Barrow-in-Furness light maintenance depot.
- Applicants must be at least 15 at application and 16 by 1 September 2026, hold five GCSEs at grades 5–9 including maths, English and science, and live within 45 minutes of a chosen site.
- Northern cites a roughly 90% offer rate for permanent jobs after completion, and its engineering team of more than 1,700 maintains a fleet exceeding 370 trains.
