Overview
- NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center updated its three-day outlook on July 25, calling for a G1 geomagnetic storm on July 27 with isolated G2 intervals from a July 23 coronal mass ejection.
- The Kp index is forecast to reach 5 between 09:00–12:00 UTC (4:00–7:00 a.m. EDT), indicating optimal conditions for auroral displays.
- Auroras are expected across 14 U.S. states—ranging from Washington to Maine—and in nearly all of Canada, including southern Ontario and British Columbia.
- The current solar maximum, the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle, has driven elevated magnetic activity that extends auroral visibility to unusually low latitudes.
- Observers should follow NOAA’s real-time Kp index updates and plan to watch between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time under minimal light pollution for the best chance to see the lights.
