Overview

• The trial is live from 29 September 2025, letting passengers start trips in an app and board without pre-buying a ticket.
• Phone GPS detects where passengers alight and applies the lowest applicable fare at the end of the day.
• The app generates a unique barcode for inspections and for passing through station barriers.
• Participants receive £15 in travel credit automatically when they sign up via Northern’s website.
• The DfT says further trials begin 27 October on Sheffield–Doncaster and 24 November on Sheffield–Barnsley, supported by nearly £1 million under the Plan for Change.
