While much of the country will continue to experience extreme warmth and humidity, California will stay cool in the near term.

Thursday will be warmer, but highs will still remain a few degrees below normal.

Overview

  • Since July 15, daily highs in the Central Valley have stayed in the comfortable mid-80s to low-90s under a robust marine layer
  • A weak ridge will push valley temperatures into the mid-90s Thursday and Friday before a new cool system returns early next week
  • Forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center indicate statewide temperatures will remain below average through the rest of July
  • Occasional inland heat spikes into the triple digits in areas like Redding and Fresno are possible but expected to be brief
  • Cooler days and nights have eased fire weather concerns for now even as fuels continue to dry
