Northern California Sees Brief Cooldown with Fire and Lake Wind Warnings

Seasonable Fourth of July weather will give way to a heat dome that could drive triple-digit temperatures by midweek

The summer’s first heat wave appears to be on tap next week as a large ridge of high pressure will develop. 
Breezes will carry in some cooler air this afternoon, which will set the stage for a pleasant Fourth of July Friday.

Overview

  • A building Delta breeze on Thursday is trimming valley highs by 4–8°F, with Sacramento topping out near 92°F and foothill temperatures in the upper 80s
  • The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Sierra from noon to midnight and a Lake Wind Advisory for mountain lakes from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., citing gusts up to 45 mph and choppy lake conditions
  • Earlier in the week, severe thunderstorms in the Sierra produced up to 1-inch hail and 60 mph gusts before weakening and clearing out
  • Independence Day is expected to be calm and cooler, with valley highs in the upper 80s and lighter winds reducing immediate fire concerns
  • Forecast models show a high-pressure heat dome building by midweek next week that could push Central Valley and inland Southern California temperatures into the 105–110°F range
