Northern California Faces Critical Fire Risk as Red Flag Warning Nears Expiration

Gusty winds and low humidity persist through Monday evening, with onshore winds expected to ease fire conditions overnight.

A red flag warning is in effect through 8 p.m. Monday for the Sacramento Valley and parts of the interior Bay Area.
The risk of fire weather risk will spread southward through the Central Valley on Monday.

Wednesday will probably be the warmest day of the week.

Overview

  • A red flag warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, covering areas from Redding to Modesto, due to gusty winds and low humidity.
  • Forecasted wind gusts include up to 35 mph along the Interstate 5 corridor and up to 55 mph in higher elevations like the North Bay mountains.
  • Grass-dominated landscapes below 1,000 feet, particularly in the Sacramento Valley and inland Bay Area, are most vulnerable to rapid fire spread.
  • An onshore marine flow is expected to return late Monday, increasing humidity and reducing winds to alleviate fire risks.
  • While PG&E does not currently plan preemptive power shutoffs, residents are urged to avoid activities that could ignite fires, such as driving over dry grasses or leaving flames unattended.
