Overview

  • NESO-led protests were held simultaneously in Guwahati, Shillong, Kohima, Imphal, Aizawl, Itanagar and Agartala on August 18 under the banner of the North East Students’ Organisation.
  • Leaders submitted memoranda urging the Centre and state governments to detect and deport alleged illegal Bangladeshi migrants and seal the India–Bangladesh border.
  • Student bodies pressed for policy overhauls including a full update of the National Register of Citizens, extension of the Inner Line Permit across all northeastern states and exclusion from the Citizenship Amendment Act.
  • In the absence of government action, groups such as the Khasi Students’ Union announced independent ILP-style verification drives to identify undocumented residents.
  • A violent August 15 attack in Barak Valley, which left two Khasi villagers critically injured, highlighted local tensions and underscored the urgency of the protesters’ demands.
