Overview
- More than a dozen communities across the region — including Cleveland, Parma, North Royalton, Avon, Richfield, Twinsburg and New Castle, Pa. — are conserving salt and prioritizing main roads, hills, bridges and critical locations.
- Cleveland reports fewer than 10,000 tons on hand with roughly 20,000 tons undelivered, will plow most residential streets without salting, and plans to pre-salt key routes before the weekend storm.
- ODOT holds about 32,000 tons of highway salt in District 12, has 300 trucks ready and recently loaned Cleveland 700 tons, while the Ohio Turnpike plans to deploy about 100 plows.
- Cargill acknowledges delivery delays and says crews are working overtime, with cities reporting pushed timelines or partial shipments, including Avon’s next delivery expected in February and North Royalton receiving 300 of 1,000 tons ordered.
- Service impacts include school closures in districts such as North Royalton and Parma, parking requests to keep streets clear for plows, and New Castle reporting about 400 tons remaining with more than 1,400 tons on backorder.
