Northeast Monsoon Triggers Heavy Rains in Tamil Nadu, Thoothukudi Bears Brunt as Schools Shut

  • The northeast monsoon set in overnight, with Thoothukudi recording very heavy rain including 154 mm in Kayalpattinam and 146 mm in Tiruchendur in the 24 hours to 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
  • District administrations declared school holidays for Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram as showers persisted and local flooding was reported.
  • The IMD issued orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rain in Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram, with yellow alerts for other districts including Chennai and Kanyakumari.
  • Roads were waterlogged and the emergency ward at Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital saw stagnation that hospital sources linked to delayed PWD desilting, with staff clearing the water.
  • Fishermen were advised to stay ashore due to squally winds of 35–45 km/h, reaching 55 km/h offshore, as officials worked to drain inundated areas.
