Northeast Monsoon Set to Withdraw From South India Within 48 Hours

Forecasters expect a short dry spell, with a quick shift to warmer daytime temperatures.

  • IMD bulletins say conditions are favourable for the cessation of northeast monsoon rains over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and adjoining south-peninsular areas within about two days.
  • RMC forecasts dry weather across Tamil Nadu through January 22, with light to moderate showers possible along coastal areas including Puducherry and Karaikal on January 23–24.
  • The end of rainfall is expected to push up daytime maximums, with Chennai near 30–31°C and night temperatures generally near normal through January 21.
  • Tamil Nadu has logged surplus January rain so far at 25.7 mm against a 9.4 mm average, after a Bay of Bengal system from January 7–11 produced unexpected showers.
  • Early-morning mist or haze is likely, isolated ground frost may occur in higher reaches of the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal, and strong winds up to 55 kmph are forecast over south Tamil Nadu’s coast, the Gulf of Mannar and the Comorin Sea on January 18 with an advisory for fishermen.
