Northeast Monsoon Set to Begin Over Tamil Nadu on Oct. 16 as Heavy Rains Trigger Alerts

An upper-air circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal is channeling moisture that will sustain widespread rain and gusty conditions across the southern peninsula through the weekend.

Overview

  • IMD and RMC Chennai say conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon’s full withdrawal and the northeast monsoon’s onset over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the southeast peninsular region by Thursday.
  • Widespread downpours have already hit many districts, with Ennore in Chennai recording 14 cm in 24 hours and several coastal and Western Ghats areas reporting heavy to very heavy rain.
  • Orange and yellow alerts were issued for multiple Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai, and fishermen were advised to stay ashore as 35–55 kmph winds and rough seas persist over the Gulf of Mannar, Kumari Sea, Kerala coast and adjoining waters.
  • Reservoir managers began precautionary releases from Poondi (about 700 cusecs) and Red Hills (about 200 cusecs) as inflows surged, and Tiruvallur authorities warned low-lying localities about potential flooding.
  • Forecasts point to light to heavy rain across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana through Oct. 20, with Karnataka’s monsoon onset expected on Oct. 16 and showers set to return to Mumbai from Oct. 16 without easing the heat.
