Northeast Frontier Railway Electrifies 30 Regional Services

NFR says the shift will cut diesel use, lower operating costs, reduce CO2 emissions by using electric locomotives to power compatible coaches.

Overview

  • Northeast Frontier Railway has moved 12 more passenger services from diesel to electric traction, raising the number switched this financial year to 30.
  • The latest conversions include services such as the Lachit Express, Dekargaon‑Silapathar Express, Rangiya‑Murkongselek Express and the Guwahati‑Ledo Intercity.
  • Railway estimates project annual diesel savings of about 98.55 lakh litres, a reduction in operating expenditure of roughly Rs 140 crore, and a cut in CO2 emissions of about 26,411 tonnes.
  • NFR says electric traction will reduce locomotive changes, save transit time, improve punctuality and allow head‑on generation from electric locomotives to replace diesel generator cars on compatible coaches.
  • The electrification drive forms part of wider NFR work to upgrade tracks, bridges and cross‑border links, including inspections and efforts to fast‑track the Agartala–Akhaura connection.
