NORTHCOM Launches 24-Hour Quick-Reaction Drone Defense Teams for U.S. Bases

The modular fly-away kits mark a shift from advising installations to deploying plug-and-play defenses validated in recent Eglin tests.

Overview

  • Gen. Gregory Guillot announced teams that can be dispatched within a day to help base commanders counter drone incursions they cannot handle alone.
  • Initial capability will be based at Peterson Space Force Base with plans to expand to three regional teams on the East Coast, West Coast, and Alaska, using C-130s for rapid delivery.
  • The first kits, built by Anduril, combine Mobile Sentry sensors, Wisp SkyFence imaging, Pulsar RF detection and electromagnetic effects, and the Anvil hit-to-kill interceptor.
  • Deployment hinges on training, validation, and FAA approvals, and the teams will operate under installation commanders’ existing authorities.
  • Falcon 25.2 at Eglin AFB tested layered radar, RF/GNSS effects, directed-energy, and kinetic options as officials reported reported incursions rising from about 230 to roughly 420 year over year.
