Northampton County DA Announces Charges in Two Social Media Stunts That Led to Death and Brain Injury

Prosecutors aim to deter copycats by filing charges without seeking incarceration.

Overview

  • Involuntary manslaughter charges were filed in both cases, which authorities say stemmed from attempts to mimic viral challenges.
  • In the June incident at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, a 17-year-old allegedly towed an upside-down folding table, causing 17-year-old David Nagy to be thrown into a parked vehicle and killed.
  • In a separate March 18 episode at a Park and Ride lot on William Penn Highway, a 19-year-old allegedly drove while a 20-year-old friend ‘surfed’ on the trunk and suffered permanent catastrophic head injuries after falling.
  • The DA said neither driver intended harm, but described their conduct as so grossly negligent and reckless that it was criminally culpable.
  • Both defendants were known to the victims’ families and had no prior records, and the families and prosecutors say they are not seeking jail time while publicizing the cases as a warning.
