North Yorkshire and Norfolk Police Enforce Uniform Ban for Off-Duty Officers at Pride

The move follows a ruling that uniformed participation breached police impartiality, confining uniforms to on-duty officers to preserve public confidence.

Overview

  • A July 16 High Court ruling found Northumbria Police acted unlawfully by allowing uniformed officers and Pride-branded vehicles at the 2024 Newcastle Pride, breaching their duty of impartiality.
  • On July 21, North Yorkshire Police prohibited off-duty officers from wearing or altering uniforms or vehicle livery at Pride events, reserving uniform use for on-duty personnel policing the parade.
  • Norfolk Police issued a similar ban for Norwich Pride and warned that on-duty officers could face disciplinary action if they participate beyond public order duties in uniform.
  • Off-duty officers from both forces may attend Pride in civilian clothes but must remove all police insignia and branding.
  • Women’s Rights Norfolk accused the forces of ignoring impartiality laws and is calling on police to uphold strict neutrality at public gatherings.
