North Wales Raid Targets Illicit Mounjaro Sales as UK Cracks Down on Fake Weight-Loss Jabs

Health leaders say criminal networks are exploiting social media to sell hazardous, unlicensed injections.

Overview

  • North Wales Police seized 48 Mounjaro capsules worth more than £5,000, along with syringes and medical equipment, in a Monday raid on a property in the Llanrwst area following public tip-offs.
  • UK heads of Eli Lilly, Pfizer and Theramex, joined by the Patients Association, warned in a letter of a sharp rise in illegitimate supply networks using social-media posts, online forums and unlawful websites.
  • The MHRA says surging demand has created a market ripe for exploitation and in October officers raided a Northampton site, seizing large quantities of autoinjectors and materials linked to illegal production.
  • Regulators caution that illicit products may contain the wrong ingredients, incorrect doses or harmful substances such as insulin or methamphetamine, with reports this year of hospital admissions and a death after unlicensed injections.
  • The City of London Police reports confiscating £32,000 of fake Mounjaro and Ozempic and says an organised crime group is involved in distributing the counterfeit medicines.
