North Tower Crane Comes Down at Salt Lake Temple After Four Years of Heavy Lifts

A temporary 800-ton crane enabled a multi-day, overnight takedown that signals heavy materials are in place.

Overview

  • Crews dismantled the 270-foot north tower crane Oct. 27–29 using an erected 800-ton crane, then removed the 800-ton crane after completion.
  • Workers operated overnight under city-approved lane restrictions and temporary street closures, loading crane sections onto semitrucks for transport.
  • The north crane had run since August 2021 for nearly 18 hours a day, six days a week, with lift capacity of about 35,000 pounds at its base and 10,000 at its tip.
  • The south tower crane remains on site and will continue supporting renovation work until spring 2026, according to the Church.
  • Exterior upgrades to the Relief Society Building are adding a new accessible west entrance for completion by spring 2026, and a public open house for the temple is scheduled for April–October 2027.
