North Rim of Grand Canyon Remains Closed as Wildfires Continue

Containment efforts have been hampered by extreme drought, unpredictable winds plus a chlorine gas leak, triggering demands for an independent investigation.

Overview

  • The White Sage Fire and Bravo Dragon Fire, both ignited by July 4 lightning strikes, have scorched about 7,700 and 2,000 hectares respectively and still burn under efforts slowed by drought and erratic winds.
  • On July 14, the Bravo Dragon Fire destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge along with roughly 50 to 80 administrative and visitor buildings.
  • A chlorine gas leak at a park water treatment facility led to the evacuation of firefighters and hikers from the canyon corridors.
  • Park authorities have shuttered the North Rim to all visitors through October 15, 2025, while keeping the heavily trafficked South Rim open.
  • No injuries have been reported and Governor Katie Hobbs has called for an independent investigation into the blazes’ causes and response.
