North Korea Unveils Hwasong-20 ICBM at 80th-Anniversary Parade

The new missile remains untested, leaving its real capability unproven.

Overview

  • Pyongyang staged a large Oct. 10 military parade marking the Workers’ Party’s 80th anniversary, featuring the first public appearance of the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile.
  • State media billed the Hwasong-20 as the country’s most powerful strategic nuclear system, while analysts say tests could come soon and it may be designed to carry multiple warheads.
  • China and Russia sent senior delegations led by Premier Li Qiang and Dmitri Medvedev, although Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin were absent.
  • Medvedev, quoted by Russia’s TASS, said North Korean units sent to the Kursk region marched in the parade, highlighting deepening military ties connected to the war in Ukraine.
  • The display also included hypersonic and long-range cruise missiles, air-defense and ground-to-ground systems, drones, new Chonma-20 tanks and 600 mm rocket launchers, as Kim Jong Un urged building an “invincible” force.
