North India Cold Wave to Persist Through Jan 13, IMD Says, as Delhi Hits 13-Year January Low

Forecasts point to more cold-wave days than usual this month, intensifying fog-related hazards.

Overview

  • The IMD says cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on January 12–13.
  • Dense morning fog is expected over northwest India and Bihar for the next five days, delaying more than 300 flights in Delhi on Sunday and contributing to a fatal highway crash near Patna.
  • Parts of Jharkhand are under a yellow alert for January 13–16, with isolated cold-day conditions forecast in Bihar until January 16.
  • Ranchi authorities ordered schools closed for students up to class six through January 14, with classes 7–12 starting from 10 am during the cold spell.
  • Minimums plunged to sub-zero in Rajasthan (Pratapgarh −2°C, Barmer −1°C) and near-freezing in Punjab and Haryana, while Delhi saw 2.9°C at Aya Nagar and Palam’s coldest January morning in 13 years; the IMD indicates conditions may linger in isolated pockets on January 14 before easing.
