North India Cold Wave to Persist Through Jan. 13 as Delhi Logs 13-Year Low

IMD expects 8 to 11 cold‑wave days this winter, exceeding the usual 4 to 6.

Overview

  • IMD says cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Jan. 12–13, with dense morning fog over northwest India and Bihar through the week.
  • Delhi recorded Aya Nagar at 2.9°C and Palam at about 3°C, the latter its coldest January morning in 13 years, with the weather office issuing cold wave alerts for the capital.
  • Sub‑zero minimums were logged in parts of Rajasthan, including Pratapgarh at −2°C and Barmer at −1°C, while Bathinda hit 1.6°C and Hisar 2.2°C as the chill tightened across Punjab and Haryana.
  • Low visibility disrupted travel as more than 300 flights were delayed at Delhi airport, and a fog‑related crash near Patna left two dead; IMD also projects isolated cold‑day conditions in Bihar until Jan. 16.
  • Local measures expanded as Gautam Buddh Nagar ordered schools up to Class 8 closed through Jan. 15, the IMD issued a yellow cold‑wave alert for parts of Jharkhand for Jan. 13–16, and Ranchi kept schools closed up to Class 6 until Jan. 14.
